Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

What is a PPO?

A Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) is a health insurance plan that offers a network of healthcare providers who have agreed to provide services at negotiated rates. Unlike HMOs, PPOs don't require you to choose a primary care physician or obtain referrals to see specialists. You can see any doctor or specialist you choose, but you'll pay less when using in-network providers.

Why PPOs matter

  • Maximizes provider choice: Allows you to see any doctor without referrals
  • Provides coverage flexibility: Covers both in-network and out-of-network care at different cost levels
  • Simplifies specialist access: Enables direct scheduling with specialists without primary care approval
