What Is Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)?

Medigap is private insurance designed to help cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not pay, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are offered by private insurers but are standardized and regulated by Medicare.

How does Medigap work?

  • Works alongside Original Medicare: Medigap only supplements Medicare coverage—it does not replace it.
  • Covers gaps in costs: Depending on the plan, it may help cover expenses like hospital stays, skilled nursing care, and foreign travel emergencies.
  • Requires a monthly premium: Patients pay a premium to the private insurer in addition to their Medicare Part B premium.

What Medigap doesn’t cover

  • Prescription drugs: Medigap plans do not include drug coverage—you need a separate Medicare Part D plan for prescriptions.
  • Long-term care: Assisted living, custodial care, and private-duty nursing are not covered.
  • Dental, vision, and hearing aids: Most plans do not include these benefits.
