Annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum

What is an Annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum?

An annual out-of-pocket maximum is the most you have to pay for covered healthcare services in a policy year before your insurance begins to pay 100% of the allowed amount. This limit includes deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, but typically doesn't include your monthly premiums or spending for services your plan doesn't cover. Once you reach this maximum, your insurance company pays all costs for covered services for the remainder of the policy year.

Why annual out-of-pocket maximums matter

  • Provides financial protection: Caps your healthcare spending to protect against catastrophic medical expenses
  • Enables budget planning: Helps you understand the maximum financial risk you face each year
  • Ensures comprehensive coverage: Once reached, eliminates cost-sharing concerns for the remainder of the year
